As a student of Wm. Merritt Chase and Kenyon Cox at the Art Students League N.Y., and in Paris under James McNeil Whistler, David Ericson was considered to be one of the most poetic American painters of the early 20th century. His honors include: Gold Medal, Paris; Silver Medal, St. Louis Worlds Fair; Hon. Mention, Carnegie Institute, Pittsburg. He taught in Duluth Minnesota and Buffalo New York. The Tweed Museum in Duluth has the most extensive collection of Ericson’s work.
The city of Ostend is the queen of summer resorts and one of the oldest fishing ports in Europe -- famous for it’s splended waterfront casino and gay life. It was the summer home of the Royal family who lived in an unpretentious villa facing the sea. This picture was painted by me in the Spring of 1913 and shows the old fishing port.
The fleet is just going out on the incoming tide, while in the background the lights blaze in the shops, and cafe’s. Ostend is pretty all distroyed. Artists and critiques admire this picture for its night atmosphere and remarkable rendering of water.

The Moonlight by David Ericson is one of the most convincing landscapes at the Academy this year. It is like a poem seen through a golden frame. -- N.Y. Times 1917
