Clara Jane Stephens was a pupil of William M. Chase, Kenyon Cox, and Frank V. DuMond at the Art Students League in New York. She was active with the Portland Sketch Club in the 1890's and a teacher at the Museum Art School from 1917 until 1938. Also studied in France & Italy. Exhibitions include: Lewis & Clark Exposition in 1905, the Panama Pacific International Exposition in 1915, San Francisco Art Association in 1918, Oakland Art Gallery in 1928.
