"The Art of the Creel" is America's definitive work on fishing creels. It is beautifully photographed, and was lovingly
authored by two collectors and fishermen. It includes 196 pages of the photographs and descriptions of over 200
creels, from the days of Isaak Walton to the 1950s when the basket creel gave way to catch-and-release, reduced catch
limits and changes in the style of fishing gear.
"The Art of the Creel" emphasizes the Japanese-made baskets that were trimmed and reinforced artistically in leather by
saddle shops in the Northwest. In particular, it emphasizes those made by the country's most important maker,
Portland'sThe Geo. Lawrence Co. and its spin-off shops.
This spread shows the opening panel of the 22 page Geo. Lawrence Co. chapter. Much of the text of this section
was authored by W.C. Lawrnce III (George Lawrence's Great Grandson), maker of the creels on the preceeding pages.
