The Spirit of Storytelling, a workshop and benefit for Elizabeth Lyon

November 22nd, 1-5 pm

Cost: $50

This workshop is intended to get writers to a place where they can discover deeper truths about characters by getting to a place without judgement.

I believe some writers struggle because they make story characters an extension of the author, and the author's issues, and the writer's internalized judgements about 'good' and 'bad'. This makes characters actors in an internal drama. The purpose of this workshop is to help writers create characters who have fully developed, vibrant inner lives. The workshop will include techniques to help writers get to those deeper truths.

Checks for this workshop should be made out to Elizabeth Lyon, since all the money collected will go to her.

The workshop will be held at the Collins View Center, 318 SW Palatine Hill Rd, Portland, Oregon, 97219. Email bjscript@teleport.com for directions.

Donations will also be accepted for Elizabeth, who is recovering from a third back surgery and will be unable to work in the coming months.

Checks should be mailed to Spirit of Storytelling, C/O Willamette Writers, 9045 SW Barbur Blvd Ste 5a, Portland, OR 97219 (Willamette Writers is not sponsoring the workshop.

I'll be speaking on several panels at Orycon, a science fiction and fantasy convention in Portland, Oregon, November 27-29th. My panels will be about avoid scams, how to write a synopsis, and the business of writing. The cost of the convention is $60; there will also be panels on writing, science, book signings, an art show, and dances.
