Jerry Simchuk, a renowned bird and fish carver, is offering a class in carving a Western Scrub Jay at Judy Caldwell’s studio located in Mulino, Oregon.  Jerry is not only a phenomenal sculptor but also a wonderful teacher.  If you are looking to raise your level of expertise, Jerry is the one to do it for you.

For the level of information and detail involved in these projects, it has been necessary to create a two-part class format.  The first class is focused on carving the bird while the second is focused on painting the bird.  In order to allow time to complete the carving of the project, there will be a few months in between classes.

This class is a 6-day carving workshop.  The objective of this class is to learn about the Western Scrub Jay and the techniques used to carve a decorative sculpture.  Some of the many things you will learn in this class include: anatomy, carving techniques, feather groups and texturing.

The class is limited to 10 students on a first come, first serve basis.  A $100 non-refundable deposit is required to hold a space (refundable in special cases).  For those signed up a list of supplies and materials will be provided in advance of the class.  Due to the increased cost for Tupelo wood, shipping and it’s low availability there will be a blank fee which will cover the cost of the blank, eyes, and any other materials needed for this project.  If an additional blank is desired please indicate as early as possible.  An instructional book and study cast for the project bird will be made available for purchase during the class as well.

There is room for several RV’s at the Caldwell’s and several Motels in the area.  With a $10/day minimum chip in pool we will put together lunch fixings at the studio and dinners at the house.  If you have any questions regarding this class please contact Judy Caldwell.  You may also contact Jerry if you have any questions about this or any of his other classes.
