We're a small independent label featuring original artists from the Pacific Northwest.
The most oustanding current project is the planned second volume of the Portland Blues Sampler "A Taste of the Blue Rose." Calling all Pacific Northwest Blues artists! If you would like to be considered for this compilation, send a CD or cassette to Flying Heart Records, 4015 NE 12th Ave., Portland OR 97212, and mark it "Blue Rose."
Also noteworthy is the successful publication of Flying Heart Records founder Jan Celt's translation (from Polish to English) of his late father's book, Z Retingerem do Warszawy i z powrotem: Raport z Podziemia, 1944 by McFarland Publishing, under the title Parachuting into Poland, 1944: Memoir of a Secret Mission with Jozef Retinger . This spellbinding World War II memoir is available at amazon.com and it has its own facebook page as well. Go ahead and give it a "like!" The book deals with Operation Salamander (during World War II, in 1944) and the person of Dr. Joseph Retinger . This fascinating account by Tadeusz Chciuk-Celt , written under the pen name Marek Celt, had only been available in the Polish original -- up to now. It's also available as an eBook. Take a look here at an article about this project by Angie Jabine in the Reed College alumni magazine of September, 2010.
Our CDs are now all available for sale or download at CD Baby, which is really a great site based right here in Portland. The CDs
are no longer available on Amazon with whom we have ceased working as of April, 2017. Also, you can always mail-order the old-fashioned way.
Our most current CD offering is a re-issue of the late Tom McFarland's excellent album, Voodoo Garden. Originally released in 1990, it showcases Tom's talent as a songwriter and performer. The fact that we still get orders for it after twenty years pretty much says it all. Several artists, most notably Charlie Musselwhite, have recorded cover versions of Tom's songs.
The previous year we re-issued Janice Scroggins Plays Scott Joplin -- remastered by Kevin Nettleingham and with a new graphics package by Caleb Olsen. Janice was a great inspiration, and her recording of Scott Joplin's rags -- also made over twenty years ago, will you look at the time fly by! -- are unique. Where everyone else seems to like to race through the Maple Leaf Rag, say, it's Janice who adheres to the composer's own clearly stated instruction that "it is never right to play ragtime fast." The result is a revelation. And the slower pieces -- Heaven in Janice's hands! May she rest in peace forever.
Jan's classic 1989 portrait of Napalm Beach is right here.
It's worth noting that the Chciuk family of my father's generation produced four brothers who all fought in World War II and survived, including ace fighter pilot Wladyslaw Chciuk who took part in the Battle of Britain.
