John Patrick Higgins was born in Dalton, Massachusetts on March 16th, 1933. He was the eldest of a large number of kids, a dozen in all. Johnny graduated from Dalton High School in 1951. He served his country in the U.S. Army (84th Eng Constr Battalion) and was deployed to Korea during the war there. After that war, following several months' additional training at the Japanese Naval Academy, Johnny returned to beautiful western Massachusetts in 1954 and commenced working as a union carpenter. He was regarded as an excellent skilled craftsman and hard worker. He married Kay Sheehan on November 24th, 1955 and they have five surviving children: Cathleen, John, Colleen, Maureen and Tim. He put all five of them through college on his wages as a carpenter. He celebrated his 77th birthday at our house in Portland, Oregon, where this picture was taken. Johnny died on Thursday, February 24th, 2011.
