Metro State Downs Kentucky Wesleyan For Division II Title

Metropolitan State College of Denver used stifling full-court pressure, scored 34 points in the paint and captured a national championship by defeating top ranked Kentucky Wesleyan, 80-72 on March 23.

It was the third time in four years the teams have met in the title tilt with Metro winning in 2000 and Wesleyan in 1999. Wesleyan came into the contest as the defending national champs.

Cal Poly Pomona Wins Second Straight Division II Women's Crown

Cal Poly Pomona’s climbed to the top of the NCAA Division II basketball world again. The Broncos capped off a memorable title run with a 74-62 victory over Southeastern Oklahoma State Saturday night in the championship game at the Mayo Civic Center. Lauri McIntosh poured in 31 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead the way. McIntosh was named the Elite Eight Tournament's Most Outstanding Player, which was a fitting conclusion to one of the best four-year careers in Cal Poly Pomona history.

The championship was the fifth for Cal Poly Pomona, which ties North Dakota State for the most in Division II history. The Broncos also won their 46th NCAA postseason game, which is a new standard.

Otterbein Wins Division III National Title

Kevin Shay, Jeff Gibbs, and Tony Borghese combined for 75 points to lead Otterbein College (30-3) to a 102-83 victory over Elizabethtown in the championship game of the 2002 Division III Men’s Basketball Tournament at the Salem Civic Center.

Gibbs, the tournament’s Most Valuable Player, had 25 points and a Final Four-record 25 rebounds for Otterbein. Shay hit 10 of 20 shots from the field, four of six from 3-point range, and five of six free throws for a game-high 29 points. Borghese netted 11 of 14 free throws on his way to a 21-point, eight-assist performance.

Wisconsin Stevens Point Captures Division III Women's Championship

Sophomore forward Cassandra Heuer came off the bench to score a game-high 17 points, including four crucial free throws in the final minutes, as the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point held off St. Lawrence (NY) 67-65 to win the NCAA Division III women’s basketball championship Saturday night at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology.

The victory gave the Pointers their second women’s basketball crown in the school history.
