Humanistic Judaism Mailing List Information


    Thank you for subscribing to the Humanistic Judaism mailing list. This list was started in 1996.

     We hope you will enjoy this forum. This message will give you important information about the list.

     The purpose of the hjmail list is to facilitate communications for all those interested in furthering the development of Humanistic Judaism, especially in its organized form.

    This list is independently operated by Walter Hellman of Kol Shalom, Community for Humanistic Judaism  (Oregon, U.S.A.).  It is is open to all individuals and groups, affiliated or not, who have an interest in furthering the development of Humanistic Judaism.  It is not affiliated with the Society for Humanistic Judaism and the views expressed on this list, including those of the operator, do not necessarily reflect the views of the Society.
 

In particular, the hjmail list can be used to:
*    post observations, insights, etc. concerning Humanistic Judaism
*    to raise questions related to Humanistic Judaism
*    serve as an information exchange and communications vehicle for
     organized and organizing Humanistic Jewish communities
 
 

POSTING GUIDELINES:
        You are welcome to post on the list.  Please follow these
guidelines:
1.      To post to the list send your e-mail to:
               hjmail@yahoogroups.com
        Be sure to include a specific subject.
2.      Postings should be directly relevant to the purpose of the list:
        furthering the development of Humanistic Judaism.
3.      - There is a limit of 3 posts per week to the list per individual.
        - Posts over 7k are considered long.  Such posts may be limited.
        - There is a posting limit per individual of 20k per week.
        - All posts should be plain text in the body of the message.
        - Attachments are not accepted.
        - Copyrighted material cannot be posted, or other's writing without their  stated permission.
        - Do not forward petitions, virus warnings, or other material
          which you cannot personally confirm for authenticity and accuracy.
        -Do not re-quote or post private mail without the permission of the original sender
        - Unfortunately, jokes and humor messages cannot be accepted.
4.      Please sign all posts with your full name and geographical
        location.
5.      Please summarize or selectively re-quote others when responding to
        a previous post.  In general, posts should have more original
        material than quoted material.
6.      Everyone on the list has the common goal of advancing Humanistic
        Judaism.  This does not mean we will agree on everything!
        It is fine to criticize positions or ideas but not motivation or
        character.
7.      The list operator may sometimes choose to return messages to the
        writer if the messages do not meet list guidelines.  All
        messages are first read by the operator for this purpose.
8.      We encourage new participants in the list to give an
        introduction of themselves.

        An archive of HJ materials is associated with the list.  The
archive includes statements from the Society, files of discussion held on
the list relating to various topics, examples of liturgy, and discussion
on the list itself.  The archive, along with other information and
connections related to Humanistic Judaism is at the Humanistic Judaism

        Postings to the list will be preserved in the archives,
WHICH MAY BE AVAILABLE TO THE PUBLIC, and some may be included in our web
page archived files of collected postings on various topics.

         Posts sent to the list prior to Jan. 1, 1999 are in the archives
at the Humanistic Judaism Homepage referenced above.

     The Society was founded by Rabbi Sherwin T. Wine in 1969 in Detroit, Michigan.  Affiliated and independent HJ communities are located in various parts of the U.S. and the Society itself is affiliated with the International Federation of Secular Humanistic Jews.  The Society welcomes into membership all men, women and children who identify with
the history, culture, and fate of the Jewish people.

To reply to someone privately, use their E-mail address and not the mailing list address.  Use of this option when appropriate will help reduce "reading clutter" for other people on the list.  Please DO post to the general list when this is appropriate however!
