Looking for a unique way to meet people and make music?

Dig out that old ukulele from your attic or closet and join the Portland Ukulele Association (PUA)!

PUA   usually meets on the second Sunday of each month from 1:30 - 3:30 p.m.

All levels are welcome; join-in any month. An introductory lesson is available at each gathering except January 2012 (loaner ukuleles are available). Short open mic at the end of each gathering.

Fee payable at each meeting is $5 cash or check. Sorry, no credit cards.

Island Ukuleles Youth Group

Herb Ohta Jr. Saturday, May 19
KIAKO foundation is excited to bring Herb Ohta Jr to Portland for a one night performance at the Aladdin Theater. Doors open at 7 p.m., concert starts at 8 p.m.

Herb is the son of Herb Ohta Sr, the legendary, "Ohta-san", and has achieved his own accolades in the world of Ukulele performance and education. Most recently his "Ukulele Nahenahe" album has won the "Na Hoku Hanohano" Award for best instrumental, and "Best Ukulele Recording" by the Hawai'i Music Awards.

Classes forming now - Ukulele in the Classroom - taught by Marianne Brogan.

Music literacy and musicianship skills are developed using the ukulele. Level 1 & level 2 classes start yearly in late September and go through May with some breaks. Learn the elements of music: melody, harmony, rhythm, form, tempo, dynamics, and tone. Singing, picking, strumming, ear training, note reading, music theory, harmonizing, improvising, arranging and more, are explored in a group setting. Ensemble pieces in several parts are used to sample music from around the world. Join the band- it's fun, serious fun! For more info contact pua@teleport.com.
