This page will list references for dates for people and events in the first century. I encourage anyone reading this page, to check other references beyond those listed. There are instances were some references are better than others, so it's up to you to decide if the ones listed are satisfactory or not. For example, many sources list Jesus as being born before 4 BC and as early as 8 BC. This is based on the assumption that Herod the Great gave the order to kill newborns in Bethlehem, and that assumption ends up skewing the later years of Jesus's life to the point where John the Baptist can't arrive in the correct year of Tiberius Caesar's rule. If you read the main page about Jesus's birth and death years, you'll then see why the assumption about Herod the Great is wrong, and the sources listing the too early birth years for Jesus, are as well. So, it's really up to you to track down sources and verify that the sources either did their homework, or not. MS Encarta gives the following dates for: ----------------------------------------- * Tiberius Caesar ruled from 14 AD to 37 AD. * Herod the Great ruled from 31 BC to 4 BC. * Herod Antipas ruled from 4 BC to 39 AD. * Pontius Pilate ruled from 26 AD to 36 AD. * Josephus Flavius lived from 37 AD to 101 AD. Various sources list the following: ----------------------------------- * Herod Archelaus ruled from 4 BC to 6 AD. * Herod Philip ruled from 4 BC to 34 AD. God made it all, Jesus died for our sins.
