From Hagerstown Bankruptcy to Organ Clearing House...
Ever signed a contract for a new organ? Lost a down payment? Tried again with remaining funds? No, it's not the "Community Chest" card in the board game "Monopoly," it's a true story. This is a saga of tragedy, determination, and success--but originally expected to be a casualty of the recent Hagerstown bankruptcy.
Alan Miller Laufman tells it like this: "Marylhurst College signed a contract with M. P. Moller in 1990 for a new organ which was to have been installed in 1992, but the bankruptcy of the Hagerstown, Maryland firm put an end to the plan, and the College LOST its substantial DOWN PAYMENT. Consequently, the Director of Sacred Music and Organ Studies at the College, Nancy LeRoi Nickel, contacted the Organ Clearing House, hoping to find a recycled instrument that could be purchased, rebuilt, and installed within the remaining budget..." This significant installation is a pipe-organ story of tragedy, courage, and determination! Alan Miller Laufman tells it this way: "Marylhurst College signed a contract with M. P. Moller in 1990 for a new organ which was to have been installed in 1992, but the bankruptcy of the Hagerstown, Maryland firm put an end to the plan, and the College lost its substantial down payment. Consequently, the Director of Sacred Music and Organ Studies at the College, Nancy LeRoi Nickel, contacted the Organ Clearing House, hoping to find a recycled instrument that could be purchased, rebuilt, and installed within the remaining budget.
"The first possibility of obtaining a large three-manual instrument did not come to fruition; at the last minute, a 3m Hutchings-Votey, Op. 554, 1901, became available. Negotiations moved forward, and the organ was removed from the former South Congregational Church in Brockton, Massachusetts, just hours before the building was razed.
"George Bozeman, Jr. & Co. of Deerfield, New Hampshire, rebuilt the instrument for Marylhurst. Originally an electro-pneumatic organ on ventil chests, it is now a 2m mechanical-action instrument on new slider chests, incorporating the original toe-boards, with a third manual division prepared for. (The third manual is currently used as a coupling manual.)"
