Mount Angel Abbey is a community of Benedictine monks. Founded in 1882 from the Abbey of Engelberg in central Switzerland, Mount Angel shares a monastic tradition that has been as vital part of the Roman Catholic Church for more than fifteen hundred years. The monastic community now numbers 85 members, dedicated to a life of prayer and work in the service of God, of the Church, and of the larger community. The monks of the Abbey live a commitment to serve the community through daily prayer; through the education of priests; through pastoral ministry in the Archdiocese of Portland; through hospitality in the Guest House and retreat programs; through the public services of an architecturally acclaimed library; and through artistic and cultural programs.
