Phoenix from the ashes:
Richard Bond's Amazing Pipe Organ, 1996

Remarks by Walter Krueger

Just as parishioners were about to move back into their sanctuary in 1993, a disastrous fire struck the nave of Holy Rosary Catholic Church. It was especially tragic because, redecorations had just been completed in time for their centennial celebration!

So it was that two years later, the sanctuary again restored, Holy Rosary was able to feature as crowning glory, a new organ and new stained glass windows.

The new organ by Richard Bond, 1996, incorporates an unusual treasure: relatively untouched pipework from an instrument built in 1880 by John Bergstrom for the First Methodist Church of Portland. Sixteen Bergstrom ranks now yield their warm and generous in tone in the wonderfully sympathetic acoustics of Holy Rosary.

The casework of the new organ was designed to complement the Classical grace and beauty of Holy Rosary Church. The case designers at Bond consulted works of Andreas Palladio (1570 a.d.), known to be standard texts on Classical Western Architecture. From there, simple mathematical ratios procide the basis for creating the basic designs.

The wood is quarter-sawn oak with a finish of stain, linseed oil, and wax, rubbed by hand. Gilding is 24-carat German gold. Facade pipes are nearly 100% lead.

Holy Rosary Church, already known for quality vocal music under the direction of Dean Applegate, is now enjoying organ music of the same inspiring quality.
